Heat pump or air conditioner: which one to choose for your home in Quebec?

Find out everything you need to know to make an informed choice between a heat pump and an air conditioner, taking into account the specific needs of your home and our harsh Quebec climate.

Unlike an air conditioner, the heat pump is equipped with a reversing valve which allows you to switch from heating mode to cooling mode.

Differences between heat pump and air conditioner

  • Heating and air conditioning : A heat pump provides both functions, while an air conditioner only serves for cooling.

  • Energy efficiency : Modern heat pumps, such as variable speed models, can be up to 300% efficient at heating, without burning fossil fuels.

  • Climate : Heat pumps are ideal for moderate climates, but models suitable for cold climates (such as severe climate heat pumps) can operate effectively down to -20°C.

Cost and maintenance

  • Initial Cost : A heat pump and an air conditioner of equivalent range will have similar costs. However, installing a heat pump may require adjustments to the ductwork or electrical panel, which can increase the initial cost.

  • Durability : Heat pumps have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, slightly less than that of air conditioners (15 years), due to their almost constant use throughout the year.

  • Maintenance : Heat pumps require maintenance twice a year (spring and fall), compared to once for air conditioners.

Advantages of heat pumps in Quebec

With our cold winters, a heat pump adapted to harsh climates or a hybrid system (heat pump combined with a gas furnace) offers the best of both worlds. You benefit from the energy efficiency of the heat pump and the reliability of a furnace for extremely cold days.
